Neutral Safety Switch Adjustment

In automatic transmissions, the neutral safety switch (also known as the starting safety switch) is a switch, normally open, that keeps the starting system from operating while the transmission is in gear. You can adjust the lever alignment by a nut on the bottom end of the shifter handle lever.

The neutral safety/backup light switch is adjusted using a #43 drill bit.

Neutral safety switch adjustment. To adjust the slide cam, loosen cam to bracket securing screw. Hi there, you can check the switch by removing it from the trans and turning it all the way back (parking position) and try to start the engine, if it doesn't turn over, then you got a faulty switch. The two tabs on the right side of the neutral safety switch (nss) control the

Pull drill bit out and it should start properly in park or neutral. The switch passes current (turns on) when the ball is pushed in. The parking brake switch also must be activated to keep the engine running when getting off the seat or when starting the engine.

The vehicle should only start when the shift selector is in park or neutral. The neutral switch is a detent type switch that is threaded into the transmission so there is no adjustment on it. Shifted briefly into reverse then neutral then forward then neutral, then shut down.

Now hes gonna be all floating around here lol! If your neutral safety switch is wired properly and the vehicle is starting in any gear other than park or neutral while using the lokar shifter, you must adjust the neutral safety switch. None of these adjustments require removing anything.

How to replace neutral safety switch? To adjust the neutral safety switch place the transmission into neutral, (block the tires) there is a notch or and indent marker on the housing of the neutral safety switch that should be lined up with a line on the face of the collar that is around the shifter detent shaft, and if they are not in alignment then loosen the two bolts that secure the neutral safety switch and then turn the neutral safety switch until they are aligned and then tighten the securing bolts to the neutral safety. Your alignment of the nss is now complete.

Connect the negative battery cable and verify proper switch operation. Screw the 1/4 self taping screws back in place. We tracked the voltage to the feed side of the neutral safety switch (nss) on the transmission, with no voltage going through it.

Sliding the switch slightly left/right should adjust the start positions on the switch as needed. (figures 5 & 6) 7. Check switch/shifter several times for proper operation.

How to replace neutral safety switch? The neutral switch is one of several switches that effect engine starting or engine keeping running when getting off the seat. The lokar neutral safety switch passes current (is turned on) when the ball is pushed in.

Yes, the switch (if not broken) should be aligned so it will only start in park+neut. Move the neutral safety switch toward the park or neutral position. Use a wrench to remove the locknut that holds the shift cable to the shift lever.

That new switch wouldnt have helped you after all. Once you have aligned the switch and the column is still in neutral, install the nss back onto the column (gently press the nss back in the column). Attach the switch's electrical connectors and install the air induction tube.

Install the cable to the control lever and adjust as necessary. It does not pass current (is turned off) If it does turn over then is just a matter of aligne it to the right position on the trans.

Move the neutral safety switch toward the park or neutral position. Advance or hold back slide cam as required to either side of the middle position. Wipe as much of the dirt and grease off of.

Put the key in run and used a screwdriver to jump solenoid hot (a) to start (s) to start engine (in neutral). Locate the neutral safety switch. There are normally 2 screws that hold it in place that will have to be loosened to adjust it.

If it won't go thru the shift pawl, loosen the arm linkage at the shifter base and mofe it until the drill bit bottoms out. Start the engine with the gearshift in either the park or neutral position to make sure that the adjustment is correct. The new neutral safety switch comes indexed to neutral with a metal strap that you remove as you slide it over the shift shaft.

First, remove the neutral safety switch (found on the driver's side of the transmission) as well as the adjustment piece which moves the nss. The metal part of the switch should be facing towards the firewall. Pull the cable off the stud on the shift.

Im picking, good call jordan. Refer to the procedure which follows. Switch should only allow engine starting when shifter is in neutral or park positions.

Neutral safety switch adjustment and wiring step 21:for the neutral safety switch to function properly, the shifter linkage must be adjusted correctly. It is just above the transmission pan, behind where the shift cable attaches to the shift lever on the transmission. Adjust the switch and tighten the retaining bolts.

When the engine starts turning on, hold the safety switch in that position and tighten the bolts. Start the engine with the gearshift in either the park or neutral position to make sure that the adjustment is correct. Most likely, your switch is pretty crudded and dirty after over 30 years of service.

Do not attempt to adjust the neutral safety switch unless you have completed step 20. Is the neutral safety switch on the column or the floor shifter itself. When the engine starts turning on, hold the safety switch in that position and tighten the bolts.

If it's on the floor shifter you will have to remove the console unless there is a big enough plate on top and you can get your hands in to adjust it. Then make sure shifter is in neutral position and tighten rod. Transmission are in neutral position.
